Liquid Electrolyte Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors (including HYBRID ELECTROLYTE: NSPE)


Aluminum electrolytic capacitors with non-solid (liquid) electrolyte, are limited life components which are classified by the guaranteed life period (Load Life Rating) at the maximum operating temperature. The estimate field failure rate (FIT) is based upon the load life test data at maximum rated temperature (+85°C, +105°C, +125°C).

Solid electrolytic capacitors are not limited with regards to operational life. They can operate far longer, and do not exhibit wear-out (dry-out) limitations of liquid electrolyte construction (see above).
» The table below compares estimated FIT rates of solid aluminum electrolytic type as compared to tantalum type.
» Lower FIT rate indicates longer time to failure.

  • Solid aluminum type (NPC & NSP) exhibit better performance (than standard tantalum types) under short-circuit failure modes.
  • The cathode material [Polyethylene -Dioxythiophene (PEDT)] exhibits increased resistance, which acts to limit - restrict current flow thru shorted element. This will occur as internal heat reaches +300°C
